Phonics

With the Year 1 National Phonics Screening Check fast approaching, you may wish to do some extra reading and or phonics practise with your child at home.

The check consists of 40 words; 20 real words and 20 pseudo (nonsense) words that will check your child’s ability to decode words using learnt phonics sounds. Your children will read these words one to one with their class teacher. More information about the check can be found via this video link for parents:

The pass mark is not released until after all children have completed the check and you will later receive information regarding your child’s success.

Any extra time that you could spend reading will help to support your child during the check. You could help by:

  • Playing lots of sound and listening games with your child.
  • Reading as much as possible to and with your child.
  • If your child is struggling to decode a word, help them by encouraging them to say each sound in the word from left to right.
