As an infant school, statutory assessment outcomes are measured at key points during a child’s time with us.
Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception)
At the end of Reception, children are assessed against the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. This results in a Good Level of Development (GLD), which reflects whether children have met the expected level across the prime areas of learning and the specific areas of literacy and mathematics.
Phonics Screening Check (Year 1)
In Year 1, children take the Phonics Screening Check, a national assessment that measures their ability to decode and read words using phonics. Some children may retake the check in Year 2 if needed.
Year 2 Assessments
In Year 2, children complete optional SATs assessments in reading, mathematics and grammar, punctuation and spelling. These assessments are used to support teacher judgements and to inform transition to junior school.
Across all year groups, assessment information is used to monitor progress, identify strengths and next steps, and ensure that teaching and support meet the needs of all children.
Our Year 1 Phonics Screening Check results have remained consistently strong over recent years. Outcomes at PHIA are above both national and local authority averages, reflecting the high quality of phonics teaching and the effective support in place to help all pupils become confident early readers.
