If your child is in Year 2, they will take part in national curriculum tests at the end of Key Stage 1 (KS1) in:
Mathematics
English reading
English grammar, punctuation and spelling (GPS)
The tests are not mandatory for schools to administer at the end of KS1. However, at Park Hall Infant Academy, we continue to use them to help identify where children may need additional support as they transition into Key Stage 2 (KS2). Previously, the English reading and mathematics tests were mandatory, but they became optional from the 2023–2024 academic year to reduce the overall number of tests children take in primary school.
The tests are split into the following papers:
Mathematics Paper 1: Arithmetic
Mathematics Paper 2: Reasoning
English Reading Paper 1: Combined reading prompt and answer booklet
English Reading Paper 2: Reading booklet and answer booklet
English GPS Paper 1: Spelling
English GPS Paper 2: Questions
Unlike Key Stage 2 SATs, which take place during a nationally set week in May, KS1 SATs do not have a specific national timetable. At Park Hall Infant Academy, the tests are taken during the summer term. Tests are administered in the classroom in a low-stress environment—some children may not even realise they are taking them.
Although the tests are written externally, they are marked by teachers within the school. Children’s raw scores (the number of marks they achieve) are converted into a scaled score to allow comparison across years:
100 indicates your child is working at the expected standard
Maximum score: 115
Minimum score: 85
The tests are not strictly timed and are used alongside other classroom assessment methods to build a full picture of your child’s learning. KS1 SATs are an indicator of progress, not a measure of “passing” or “failing.”
Parents will receive an overall result stating whether their child has achieved the required standard, but individual scores for each test paper will only be shared if requested.
